'Hobo With A Shotgun' is a 2011 black comedy exploitation film directed by Jason Eisener. It stars Rutger Hauer as the titular Hobo; Molly Dunsworth as Abby, a local prostitute; Brian Downey as The Drake, the psychotic crime lord of Hope Town; Gregory Smith as Slick, The Drakes favourite son; And Nick Bateman as Ivan, The Drakes other son. It's based off of a fake trailer that was used to promote the double-feature 'Grindhouse' by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
The story follows The Hobo as he rides the train into Hope Town, a city he finds to be overrun with criminals and scum, the biggest of them all being the crime lord The Drake and his family. The Hobo acts as a vigilante and brings hope to the city, whilst also simultaneously angering The Drake, who puts a bounty on his head. They eventually meet in final confrontation, which I won't spoil here.
The movie is very visually stunning, in terms of both the set design and the ultra-violence of the movie. The soundtrack isn't particularly memorable, but does help add to the atmosphere of the whole movie. The acting was pretty good, and I feel like all the characters played their roles extremely well and got the feel and the presence of the character across really well, but the dialogue was pretty terrible and came across as cheesy or idiotic most of the time.
Overall, the movie delivers exactly what you'd expect based on the title and the trailer.
It gets a 6/10.
