John Wick: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

John wick is 2014 Action thriller gun fu film starring Keanu Reeves as the titular 'John Wick', a retired assassin in grieving for his dead wife; Michael Nyqvist as 'Viggo Tarasov', a russian crime lord and the former employer of John Wick; And Alfie Allen as 'Iosef Tarasov', Viggo's son and a spoiled brat type.

The story follows John as he is dragged back into the criminal underworld, after leaving so he could live a peaceful life with his wife, by the people around him and the atrocities they commit against him. Throughout the film he seeks revenge against Iosef and Viggo for what they have done to him and it is made abundantly clear that he will stop at nothing to get his way.

Going in I was expecting a simple shoot 'em up film like the 'Die Hard' or 'Rambo' series, and was pleasantly surprised when it far exceeded my expectations. The film sets up the whole massive criminal underworld element very well whilst revealing as little information about it at the same time. All the characters are interesting in their own way, and the interactions between characters indicates a heavily thought about backstory and history for each one.

The visuals of the film are also stunning. The fights are extremely well choreographed and use minimal cuts and jumps, allowing for smooth flowing fight scenes where you can actually see whats happening and understand who's winning, compared to the million cuts in a second style that a lot of modern action films go for. The set design is beautiful as well, as is accompanied by a just as beautiful and fitting soundtrack that really gets you in the mood of the scene.

Overall, the movie was very enjoyable and has me dying for more, which luckily there is a sequel to satisfy that desire.

I rate it a
8.5/10
